China has appointed Wang Dongjin as chairman of China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), replacing the ousted Yang Hua.

The announcement of Wang’s promotion was made on Thursday.

Wang has been looking after CNOOC’s management since early September when the government demoted former chairman Yang Hua to president of Sinochem.

Wang served as the president of CNPC’s listed arm PetroChina before he was named president of CNOOC in November last year.

He spent more than 30 years of his career expanding PetroChina’s overseas business. He was the chairman of CNPC’s overseas subsidiary China National Oil & Gas Exploration and Development Corporation (CNODC).
